Singapore Shophouses
Preserving character in ever changing urban environments.

I always come back to these shophouses.
And breathe in their character.
Whenever I am in Singapore, I end up walking the same streets around Tanjong Pagar, Little India and Katong. Two storeys with timber shutters, each one in its own colour. Many of them started as a shop with the family living upstairs. Today they hold cafés, restaurants and other third places, and they are among the most sought-after addresses in the city.
Right behind this one is The Pinnacle@Duxton, 50 storeys of public housing with gardens in the sky.
Singapore has changed a lot, and I love to browse through books of old photographs of the city. It’s important that cities preserve such structures, as they remain unique elements and preserve character of an ever changing urban environment.
Photo taken by myself.
