City in Nature
Singapore's development from Garden City to a City in Nature.
A city in nature.
Singapore’s goal to develop from the City of Gardens and Water into a City in Nature is ambitious. And real.
One of the most densely populated cities in the world, Singapore’s urban planning is the most ambitious, holistic and forward thinking I know. It’s not only about the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA)’s long-term approach, but the city’s execution and push of the private industry as well.
And every time I’m back I can see the difference. Not only in additional parks that opened and are more accessible, or friends that tell me that focus on biodiversity increases.
But in the built environment visibly as well:
- Adaptive reuse and new developments integrate greenery on all levels including facades.
- Developers are encouraged to provide for replacement greenery above the current norm of up to 40% of the site area.
Exploring the city again over the past week confirmed the progress. And my visit of the National University of Singapore campus after studying there many years ago in particular confirmed that Singapore is developing into a dense green space all over.
