All things semiconductor fabs, data centres, and AI campuses.
Back at NUS!
On all things semiconductor fabs, data centres, and AI campuses.
On Wednesday, I returned to the School of Design and Environment at the National University of Singapore where I studied in 2011. The NUS Department of Architecture organised a seminar with Justin Kollar, AICP, an architect, urban planner, and author of Silicon Frontier, which is based on his dissertation on techno-statecraft and the geographies of digital capitalism.
The seminar "Design and Planning in the New Infrastructural Order" covered a range of industrial developments from semiconductor fabs, data centres, and AI campuses with focus on the US, Taiwan and South East Asia.
It was highly insightful to learn from Justin’s research covering the interaction of infrastructural planning, regional planning, and high tech urban design in those regions especially as I compare these to developments I've observed in Europe and other Asian regions.
The seminar examined the impact on the different layers of society and government based on
➡️ How governments globally are transforming land use and managing resources for semiconductor and data centre developments
➡️ Research on the next phase of AI infrastructure and its massive energy and water requirements
It was not only a highly interesting and insightful seminar and discussion afterwards, but quite a walk down the memory lane being back at NUS plus an opportunity to explore new buildings on campus. And understanding how other regions and societies tackle such developments can help you learn and adopt solutions as well as spot trends.
