Urbanisation is a global mega-trend. Cities already house 50% of the global population and contribute over 80% to global GDP.

But regions differ significantly:

  • Europe has reached urbanisation levels of around 76%.

  • India's urbanisation rate is still at 37%, expected to exceed 50% by 2050.

While real estate markets are booming and opportunities are vast (Blackstone, Brookfield, or CapitaLand noticed that early), this remains an extraordinary challenge. It requires careful, effective, and focused planning to establish sustainable environments.

The opportunity?

The real estate sector is expected to contribute 15% to India's GDP by 2047 and reach USD 5.8 trillion in value, more than Germany's or France's entire GDP today.

I broke down the opportunities, challenges, and emerging solutions in yesterday's India Rising issue. This builds on previous coverage, but I'm still astonished by the sheer scale of what lies ahead.

And surprised by how little attention it's getting here in Europe.
